7-Day Morocco Itinerary: The Perfect One-Week Trip
One week in Morocco is enough to experience the country's most iconic destinations — from imperial cities to desert dunes. This itinerary balances culture, adventure, and some breathing room, taking you through Casablanca, Fes, the Sahara, and Marrakech.
Day 1 — Casablanca: Arrival and First Impressions
Land at Mohammed V International Airport and head into Casablanca. Start with the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, dramatically perched on the Atlantic coast. In the evening, stroll the Corniche waterfront and enjoy fresh seafood at a local restaurant. Spend the night in Casablanca.
Day 2 — Casablanca to Fes
Take the morning train to Fes (approximately 4 hours). Check into your riad in the medina and spend the afternoon exploring Fes el-Bali. Wander to the Chouara Tannery for views over the ancient leather-dyeing pits, and explore the blue-tiled Bou Inania Madrasa.
Day 3 — Full Day in Fes
Hire a licensed local guide for a full-day medina tour. Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University (the world's oldest), the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts, and the lively souks. In the evening, have dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the medina.
Day 4 — Fes to Merzouga (Sahara)
An early start for the long but stunning drive south through the Middle Atlas Mountains, cedar forests with Barbary macaques, and the Ziz Valley. Arrive at the Sahara dunes near Merzouga by late afternoon. Mount a camel for a sunset ride into the dunes. Spend the night in a luxury desert camp under the stars.
Day 5 — Merzouga to Skoura / Ouarzazate
Wake for sunrise over the dunes, then drive back west through the stunning Draa Valley and past the UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou kasbah — one of Morocco's most photogenic sites, used as a film location for many Hollywood productions. Stop for photos and lunch. Continue to Ouarzazate for the night.
Day 6 — Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Tizi n'Tichka Pass
Drive through the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m). Stop at Telouet Kasbah, a crumbling gem hidden off the main road. Arrive in Marrakech by early afternoon. Check into your riad in the medina and explore Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk — street food, entertainers, and atmosphere in full swing.
Day 7 — Marrakech: Full Day in the Red City
Spend your final day diving into Marrakech. Visit the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, and the Majorelle Garden (the cobalt-blue garden designed by Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent). Shop the souks and enjoy a final Moroccan meal — tagine, couscous, and mint tea.
Practical Notes
- Best done by rental car from Day 4 onward, or by joining an organized tour for the desert leg
- Book riads and desert camps well in advance in peak season (March–May, September–November)
- Budget approximately $80–150/day for mid-range travel including accommodation, food, and transport
This itinerary is flexible — swap Fes for Chefchaouen if you prefer mountain scenery, or add extra nights in Marrakech if you want more time in the city.
